Competing in the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant
Queen Pageant Dates – January 2-4, 2015: For the first time in its history, the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant is moving from August to January! This will allow contestants much more time to prepare for the event while allowing students to fully concentrate on the beginning of the school year in August instead of also participating in the pageant at the same time.
Holding the pageant in January will also allow coordinators to take advantage of the State Fairgrounds’ freer, more available facility schedule that time of year – namely, opening pageant preliminary judging to the public for the first time and housing contestants on the Fairgrounds!
Lastly, the Indiana Association of Fairs also conducts their annual convention in January. INAF is a statewide organization dedicated to promoting the growth and well-being of all Indiana fairs and festivals with educational and networking opportunities. Holding the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant schedule in that same timeframe should encourage county representatives in Indianapolis for the convention to also support their county queen in the pageant while here.
Contestants: The Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant contestants are representatives of their own county fair Queen Pageants. Approximately 87 county queens will gather in Indianapolis in January to compete for the title of Miss Indiana State Fair 2015. Contestants must be 18 years old and must not have reached her 22nd birthday as of June 1, 2015.
Requirements: A complete set of rules can be found in the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant Terms and Conditions Brochure available from the Entertainment & Events Office.
Counties may select a queen/representative in any manner they choose, provided that individual complies with the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant terms & conditions in order to compete in the State contest. Some require their county contestants to be 4-H members; some do not. 4-H is NOT a requirement at the State level. Please contact your county extension office about entering your county Queen Pageant if interested.
Pageant Judging: Each contestant participates in three preliminary judging categories – Interview, Professional Wear and Formal Wear. The three-minute interviews are private and not open to the public. NEW for 2015: preliminary judging of Professional Wear and Formal Wear will be held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Saturday, January 3, 2015 and open to the public! Further details will be posted as they become available.
During the Queen Pageant finals on Sunday, January 4, 2015, the Top Ten Finalists are announced and judged again in Professional Wear and Formal Wear, a category that also includes an on-stage question to answer. Preliminary Interview scores are kept the same. From this second round of judging, Miss Indiana State Fair and her four Court members are determined. Miss Congeniality is also announced, as voted by the contestants.
The new Queen will reign for the next twelve months, promoting the Indiana State Fair the following June-July throughout the state prior to the 17-day Fair in August.
