Rokita attends Northwest Indiana Hispanic Chamber of Commerce gala
(Merrillville) -- Secretary of State Todd Rokita delivered remarks at the Northwest Indiana Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's Black and White Ball held at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza in Merrillville on Saturday, October 20.
In his keynote remarks, Rokita pointed out that the Secretary's office produces three major publications in Spanish: the Voter Registration Form, the Voter Information Guide and the Voter's Bill of Rights, all of which are offered free. He also apprised the group that the office has been working to improve the rights of the Hispanic community by clarifying that notaries public are not mistaken for a "Notario Publico" which means attorney.
"We passed a law during my first term which imposed new restrictions on fraudulent advertising and misrepresentation regarding the use of the words "Notario Public" in a manner that is suggestive to individuals whose native language is not English," Rokita said."Under Indiana Code 33-42-2-10, a person who advertises a notary designation, including notary public or notario publico or notary, must include a "notary disclosure" in the same language as the advertisement which states: "I am not an attorney licensed to practice law in Indiana. And I may not give legal advice or accept fees for legal advice."
Rokita said he and his office are always seeking ways to protect the rights of Indiana's Hispanic community by ensuring that they understand their rights and responsibilities.
The mission of the Northwest Indiana Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is to advocate, promote, and facilitate economic opportunities for Hispanic/Latino businesses within the Northwest Indiana Region, as well as serve as a link to non-Hispanic organizations.
