Rokita to Host Free "Protect Your Pockets" Workshop in Indianapolis

(Indianapolis) -- Reservations are currently being accepted for Secretary of State Todd Rokita's "Protect Your Pockets" workshop set for Saturday, October 20 at the University of Indianapolis, Schwitzer Student Center, 1400 East Hanna Ave., Indianapolis. The workshop is co-sponsored by the University of Indianapolis School of Busines and will run from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Speakers will will focus on avoiding investment and mortgage fraud, investor basics, retirement planning, family budgeting and investor education for teachers.

The "Protect Your Pockets" workshops are an important component of the Indiana Investment Watch program developed by the Secretary of State’s office. The Secretary of State regulates securities in Indiana and can inform investors whether or not an investment is legitimate.Funding for workshops come from the state’s securities enforcement fund, which contains money collected from court settlements in securities fraud cases.

"Nearly two-thirds of Indiana adults have little or no knowledge about investing and fraudulent schemes," Rokita said. "The first step in protecting yourself is to be an educated investor. If we achieve that, we can prevent con artists from stealing Hoosiers’ hard-earned money."

Rokita and other financial experts will speak at the workshop and teach community members practical, common sense ways to avoid scams and choose products and services that meet their financial goals.

To register or to find out more information about the "Protect Your Pockets" workshop, visit www.IndianaInvestmentWatch.com or call toll-free 1-800-223-8791.

The Indianapolis Protect Your Pockets Workshop is a partner in Indiana's 2nd Annual Money Smart Weeksm.  Money Smart Week is an unregistered service mark of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
