Rokita encourages Hoosiers to donate phone cards to wounded soldiers abroad

Indianapolis (July 3) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is encouraging Hoosiers to join him in celebration of the 4th of July by sending prepaid phone cards to wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. Rokita visited Landstuhl – a military casualty hospital outside Ramstein Air Force base – as part of a mission last month to Switzerland and Germany. While visiting with troops, he learned of the hospital's request for prepaid phone cards.

"When I visited Landstuhl, I was deeply moved by the soldiers’ strength and courage. Their first thoughts were not about themselves, but about their fellow soldiers," said Rokita. "Their selflessness exemplifies the American spirit at its finest, and helping these men and women stay in touch with loved ones at home is an important way for us to express our gratitude and support for all they do."

The Base Chaplain informed Rokita that they were in serious need of phone cards for the injured troops. The hospital requests that 120-minute prepaid cards be mailed to: Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Attn: MCEUL-CH, CMR 402, APO AE 09180. Postage should be approximately $0.90 to mail one card in a standard envelope.

During his visit, Rokita met several service men and women and hospital personnel with ties to Indiana. Operated by U.S. European Military Command, Landstuhl is the primary medical evacuation facility for U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The center also services the needs of civilian family members and employees in Europe and the Middle East.
