ELECTION NIGHT CANVASS AND OFFICIAL RESULTS

Election Night Canvass

The Election Night Canvass is NOT "Official".

The vote counts reported on the Live Election Night Returns area of this site are not final or official, but represent what is known as "the Election Night Canvass".

Indiana state law requires the ninety-two counties begin counting votes cast in the county immediately after the polls close at 6 p.m., prevailing local time.

In most counties, ballots are counted first at local polling places by precinct election officials. These officials then travel on election night to a central counting location (often the county courthouse) to report the precinct election results to the county election board.

To provide a new service to the public, the Secretary of State has requested that each county election board forward the election night results for certain offices to this site. Complete or partial results from each county will be posted on this site continuously on election night as received from each county. Data entry will cease at midnight, and resume the morning after election day until reporting is complete. A county election board may vote to correct any errors in this initial election night canvass through Tuesday, November 17, 1998. As a result, the election night canvass is not final or official until then.

Official Canvass of Election Returns

Safeguarding the Integrity of the Election Process

After completing the Election Night Canvass, each county election board sends a complete set of certified election returns to the Election Division no later than noon, Monday, November 9, 1998. These official returns can be corrected by the counties through November 17, 1998, and are also subject to future revision if a recount is conducted.

After receiving the certified returns, the Election Division prepares the Official Canvass of Election Returns for statewide offices and public questions, state legislative offices, and local judicial offices by Tuesday, November 24, 1998.

The Official Canvass may be revised based on any recount conducted for these offices. All state and local level recounts must be completed by December 21, 1998.

1998 Election Report

The Definitive Record of the Indiana Election Process

After the last revisions are made to the Official Canvass of Election Returns, the Election Division prepares the 1998 Election Report. This document contains the final, official election results from both the 1998 Primary Election and 1998 General Election, as well as additional information concerning many aspects of the election process. The Election Report will be available from the Election Division in early 1999.
