Secretary of State Todd Rokita recently had the privilege of giving a Memorial Day speech at the Indiana Veterans’ Home in West Lafayette. His words honored all of those, past and present, whom have risked their lives in service to our country. The speech can be read in full by following the link below: Todd Rokita traveled to Minnesota recently to share his thoughts on election reforms. He was personally invited by Minnesota Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer to speak before election administrators and staff at their state conference in St. Cloud, MN. His talk focused on both national election reforms as well his own experiences overseeing Indiana’s reforms. Secretary of State Todd Rokita recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in a daylong Voter Fraud-Voter Intimidation Working Group organized by the federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC). Rokita joined representatives from the Department of Justice, the states of Georgia and Texas, civil rights groups, and the Republican and Democratic parties to aid the EAC in creating possible methods for future research into voter fraud and intimidation. Vote Centers The Secretary of State’s office will select three counties to serve as test sites for vote centers by October 1. Tippecanoe County is one of the counties currently applying to become a ‘testing ground’ for vote centers. If they are selected, the number of polling locations in the county would drop from 70 to around 20 to 30. The county would not have to hire as many election workers and voting should become more convenient for voters if this change occurs. "County applying to test voting center" - Journal and Courier - June 9. 2006 "Study of Vote Centers" - The Office of the Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita Statewide Voter Registration System Following the March mock election test of Indiana’s Statewide Voter Registration System (SVRS), the system had its first real-world trial in the May 2, 2006 Primary Election. "The May 2 Primary marked the first successful election using Indiana's new statewide voter file," said Rokita. "Leadership and teamwork paved the way toward the completion of this system - one of, if not the most, complex IT project in state history - and county feedback has been overwhelmingly positive concerning its performance in a real election." The SVRS will be updated over the summer to further improve performance in time for the November election.
