First Time Voter Guide

In order to vote in an Indiana election you must meet the following requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Resident of Indiana
  • Registered to vote
  • Be at least 18 years of age at or before the next general election
  • Not currently in prison after being convicted of a crime
  • You have lived in the precinct where you vote for at least 30 days before the election

You can register or update your voter registration online by visiting IndianaVoters.com, by mailing in a voter registration application, in person at your local BMV branch or your voter registration/county clerk's office. More details can be found here. To be eligible to vote in the next election, you must register at least 29 days before election day.

Residency Requirements For College Students

Indiana law stipulates that voters must register to vote at the address of their "permanent residence."  You can only have one permanent residence.  You can claim the address you traveled from to attend school as your permanent address or you may claim your permanent residence will be in the community in which you are attending school.  Whether or not you will claim your home or school address as your permanent address will depend on individual circumstances.
