Inaugural visit highlights developing relationship with Honduras and fosters discussions on international adoption and family focused programs

INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 20, 2011) – With the well-being of children a top priority, Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White today welcomed members from the Honduran Institute for Family and Children (IHNFA) to discuss issues involving the adoption process.

“Securing the process for adoptions that cross international borders only strengthens relationships between countries,” White said. “The Secretary of State’s office plays a key role in helping families adopt children outside of the country. Today’s meeting provided a healthy discussion of ideas and possible solutions for the continued improvement of the adoption process for Hoosier families.”

IHNFA oversees the assistance of a large population of poor children in Honduras, including orphans and those in single-parent homes. An orphan crisis exists in Honduras, underlining the need for adoption outreach in the United States.

The Indiana Business Services Division – an arm of the Secretary of State’s office – works closely with U.S. residents and foreign nationals in authenticating or certifying documents for a number of matters, including papers for adoption. There currently is no fee for these services in Indiana.

Between 1999 and 2009, 101 Honduran children were adopted in the United States, according to the U.S. State Department.

IHNFA Director Maria Suyapa Nuñez Martinez said today’s visit – the first time a Honduran delegation had visited the secretary of state – allowed her members to learn more about adoption procedures in Indiana and promote a campaign to encourage the adoption of Honduran children.

“We’re so pleased to have the opportunity to meet with Secretary White,” Martinez said. “Our goal is to come to Indiana to build relationships with his office. We would like to thank him for his great work on helping our people make their adoption process go smoothly. We’re the in the state of Indiana promoting a campaign to encourage Americans to go to Honduras to adopt children.”
