Opportunity offers current Purdue University senior chance to experience state government
(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is pleased to announce that Valerie Petrey of Crawfordsville is currently completing his office’s 2010 Communications Internship Program. The summer-long program selects a college student from the state and allows him or her the opportunity to experience government communications first-hand through the Secretary of State’s office.
“Valerie exemplifies the kind of distinguished students we have here in Indiana,” said Secretary Rokita. “I feel she has the potential to help guide our state and country with her desperately-needed leadership and innovation in future years and I’m thrilled to have her be a part of our communications team as she is a valuable addition.”
Petrey is currently seeking a degree in Public Relations and Rhetorical Advocacy and minors in Political Science and History. She is vice president of the Association for Women in Communications and member of the American Advertising Federation. She has also studied abroad in China and completed internships with WISH-TV, Purdue Athletics Marketing and Advertising and worked last summer for The Paper of Montgomery County.
Petrey believes the most exciting and memorable part of her internship will be working with an enthusiastic team and the chance to meet with elected officials throughout the summer.
“My time spent in Secretary Rokita’s office will give me knowledge I can carry throughout my entire career,” said Petrey. “One of the projects I’m most looking forward to working on will be helping the Securities Division’s Prosecution Assistance Unit spread the word about our new Securities Restitution Fund, which gives money back to victims of fraud.”
As a communications intern, Petrey will gain experience in writing and editing articles, letters and press releases, as well as creating and updating web content and expanding media relations for the Secretary of State’s office.
“Being an integral part of the communications team has been a rewarding experience thus far and has allowed me the opportunity to work on real projects with all four divisions of the Secretary of State,” said Petrey. “The practical experience I acquire here will not only complement my degree but provide me the unique opportunity to see how our state government operates.”
A 2007 graduate of North Montgomery High School, Petrey is the daughter of Cheryl Petrey. She will graduate from Purdue University in May of 2011 and pursue a career in the public relations and marketing field.
