SOS > Media Center >  Press Releases > 2004 Press Releases > For Immediate Release: March 11, 2004 Secretary of State Rokita's Statement on the death of Governor Orr

"I was deeply saddened this morning to learn of the passing of Governor Robert D. Orr. My thoughts today are with Mary Kay and the Governor's many friends and loved-ones.

Much has been said about Bob Orr's accomplishments as Governor of our great state. They stand as a lasting memory to him. But Governor Orr will also be remembered as the patriarch of an entire generation of leaders in this state whom he inspired and who served for him and with him during his years in public service.

I was fortunate enough to be among the second, or perhaps even the third, generation of Hoosiers to consider Governor Orr a mentor and friend. Over the last several years I enjoyed opportunities to visit with him in his home and his guidance and advice have aided me in countless situations.

In October, when I last spent time with Governor Orr, I was struck by the deep interest he continued to exhibit in the issues of the day and in particular the upcoming elections. It was obvious to me that the welfare of the people of our state and our country, as well as the personal well-being of those of us in public life, were always very much on his mind."
