Bray: Keiser Family of Poland receives Hoosier Homestead Award

(STATEHOUSE)State Sen. Richard Bray (R-Martinsville) announced that H. Norman and Carolyn S. Keiser of Poland received the Hoosier Homestead Award today from Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman during a Statehouse ceremony. The Keisers received a Sesquicentennial Award because their farm has been in operation for more than150 years.

“Family-owned farms are the backbone of the Hoosier economy,” Bray said. “Maintaining a family-owned farm since 1854 is a significant achievement. The Keisers are to be congratulated for their hard work and many contributions to the Hoosier economy.”

Hoosier Homestead Awards were established in 1976 and are presented twice annually to family farms that:

  • Have been owned by the same family for more than 100 years
  • Consist of more than 20 acres
  • Produce more than $1,000 worth of agricultural products each year
  • Farms 150 years old receive Sesquicentennial Awards and farms 200 years old receive Bicentennial Awards

According to Bray, nearly 4,500 farms have been designated Hoosier Homesteads since the program began.

Indiana ranks second in the nation in the percentage of prime farmland and over half of the state’s land is involved in crop production.

Sen. Bray represents Senate District 37, which includes Morgan, Putnam, Owen, Clay, Johnson and Monroe Counties.
