Bray: Senate passes identity theft legislation
Bill will increase penalties for birth certificate fraud
(STATEHOUSE) – Legislation to protect Hoosiers from identity theft by increasing penalties for birth certificate fraud was passed today by the Indiana Senate 47-0. House Bill 1113 is sponsored by Sen. Richard Bray (R-Martinsville).
“Identity theft is a growing problem affecting thousands of Hoosiers,” Bray said. “By increasing the penalty for birth certificate fraud, we can hopefully prevent more Hoosiers from becoming victims.”
Bray’s bill increases from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class D felony the penalty for:
- Making a false or fraudulent statement when applying for a birth certificate or when applying for permission to inspect birth records;
- Altering, counterfeiting, or mutilating a certified copy of a birth certificate; or
- Using an altered, counterfeit, or mutilated copy of a birth certificate.
HB 1113 has been sent to Gov. Daniels for his consideration.
Sen. Bray represents Senate District 37, which includes Morgan, Putnam, Owen, Clay, Johnson and Monroe Counties.
