Property Tax repeal discussion moved to Senate Chambers
President Pro-Tem David Long wants to ensure public has opportunity to be heard
STATEHOUSE – Senate President Pro-Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) has announced Tuesday’s hearing on Senate Joint Resolution 8 – a constitutional amendment to repeal property taxes – will be moved to Senate chambers to accommodate more people.
SJR 8 is the only item on the agenda for Long’s Rules and Legislative Procedure Committee. Long said the hearing – scheduled to begin immediately after the Senate’s 1:30 p.m. opening session – will follow this format:
- a presentation by SJR 8 authors Sens. Brent Waltz (R-Greenwood) and Mike Young (R-Indianapolis);
- a power point presentation by Legislative Services Agency on factual data and a review of fall committee meetings concerning property taxes;
- a 30-minute presentation by SJR 8 supporters;
- a 30-minute presentation by those who have concerns about SJR 8; and
- a maximum of three hours devoted to public testimony, rotated evenly in three minute increments between those who support the legislation and those who have concerns.
“By moving this meeting to a more spacious setting and establishing a balanced time table for testimony, we ensure that all sides will have an opportunity to participate in discussing and listening to debate on this resolution,” Long said.
Long emphasized that those who cannot attend the meeting may watch it live via the Internet at http://www.ihets.org/webmedia/asx/senate/live.asx
