Speedway Students Donate Money to Japan Earthquake Relief

Lt. Governor Skillman accepts check, announces trade mission details

SPEEDWAY - Students from Speedway High School today presented Lt. Governor Becky Skillman with a $2,500 check that she will personally deliver to the Japanese people for earthquake relief. She will make the presentation while on her economic development trade mission to Japan Sept. 21-29.

"I'm very impressed by these students' generosity and concern for people a world away," Lt. Governor Skillman said. "I'm certain the Japanese people will be touched by the gesture as well."

Speedway has a relationship with the city of Motegi in Japan that goes back nearly eight years. The cities were drawn together because of racing. Motegi is the site of "Twin Ring Motegi", a race track that began hosting Indy Racing League events in 2003.

Over the years, officials from the two cities have visited each other. In 2007 and 2009, Speedway Junior High students traveled to Motegi, staying with local families, attending school in Motegi, and meeting the mayor. Speedway has also hosted students from Motegi.

"When we heard about the devastating earthquake, our students sprang into action and did what they could to help," said Speedway Schools superintendent Ken Hull. "The people of that city feel like members of our Speedway family."

The Lt. Governor will present the check to Mayor Tatsuya Koguchi of Motegi on Sept. 23.

Lt. Governor Skillman also released the full itinerary and delegate list for her trade mission as well as an agriculture mission to China the State Department of Agriculture begins this weekend. The Japan trip involves visits to Indiana customers including Subaru, Sony, Toyota, and Aisin as well as a keynote address at the Midwest U.S.-Japan Association meeting.
