INDIANAPOLIS - A new high school has taken the title of "State Fair Marsh Band Day Champion." Winchester Community High School has broken the streak of dominating big bands with a combination of great leadership and dedicated students.
Winchester band director Douglas Fletcher, who left defending State Fair champion Anderson last year, carried his skills to the small band, which hasn't been in the top five since 2002 and hasn't had a championship since 1997.
The school performed "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and dazzled the judges in every category.
"This is amazing," said band member Alexandra Wolfe. "This is my second year in the band and I was nervous about a new band director, but now I am excited to have won and don't want him to leave!"
"I feel great," said Thomas Belgow. "I have been in band for 10 years and it has been my childhood dream to win a State Fair Band Day."
