IDEM providing assistance to local wastewater treatment plant

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is working with American Suburban Utilities to restore operations at its wastewater treatment plant in West Lafayette, Ind. IDEM was notified today that an equipment failure at the plant resulted in the discharge of untreated wastewater and sludge from the facility into Cole Ditch.

The plant serves a small residential area and three schools. Area residents are advised to avoid contact with the ditch and keep pets out of the water. Individuals who think they may have come in contact with wastewater from the facility should follow standard precautions to avoid ingestion of the water and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.

Sewer service is not expected to be disrupted. A contractor is conducting a cleanup of the sludge.
