Hoosiers Care celebrates third anniversary at Indiana State Fair

Who:   The Indiana Department of Environmental Management

What:   Celebrating the third anniversary of the "Hoosiers Care" initiative

Where:   Indiana State Fairgrounds, Our Land Pavilion

When:   Friday, August 5, through Sunday, August 21, 2011

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and its five sister agencies are celebrating the three year anniversary of the "Hoosiers Care" initiative. The Hoosiers Care booth will be located in the climate-controlled Our Land Pavilion, and staff will be performing in the interactive "Use your Brain" stage show to quiz participants on their knowledge of environmental-related facts. The Indiana State Fair will run Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 21, 2011.

"The Indiana State Fair is a perfect opportunity to reach out to Hoosiers on what they can do to protect the environment," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "Hoosiers Care has been extremely successful in encouraging Indiana residents to focus on making small changes that help our environment and save money."

The partners strive to improve Indiana's environment one person at a time. Staff, including the partners' mascot "Dr. Reece Cycle," will be asking fairgoers to sign the Hoosiers Care pledge to change one single activity to benefit the environment. An added bonus of making one change is saving money.

"Taking the pledge is easy to do," said Dr. Reece Cycle. "If you can sign your name and agree to do one simple thing like turning off the water while brushing your teeth, unplugging unused electronics or carpooling, not only will you save money but the earth will thank you for conserving resources."

Besides IDEM, the Hoosiers Care initiative is a collaborative effort of the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, the Indiana Office of Energy, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture and Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. These agencies help educate Hoosiers on simple steps they can take to protect their environment.
