IDEM leader receives public service award

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Indiana (ACEC Indiana) recently honored Thomas W. Easterly, P.E., Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Commissioner, with the 2011 Public Service Award during the organization's annual awards banquet held at the Indianapolis Marriott East.

The Public Service Award was established in 1984 to pay tribute to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the profession of consulting engineering. Commissioner Easterly worked on environmental issues in both government and business for over 30 years prior to his appointment by Governor Mitch Daniels as IDEM's Commissioner in January 2005.

Commissioner Easterly earned both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and he has certification as a Professional Engineer in four states. Easterly has a proven track record of developing partnerships between industry and environmental groups, helping to start the Bethlehem Steel Community Advisory Committee and working with the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center.

"At the helm of IDEM over the last six years, Tom has guided the agency to work with the regulated community to solve problems and improve Indiana's environment," said ACEC Indiana President John Brand.  "His partnership approach with the public and private sector entities has fostered the state's economic development in responsible and sustainable ways."

"It is an honor to be recognized by my fellow engineers," said Commissioner Easterly. "I appreciate Governor Mitch Daniels having faith in me to head an agency that plays such a vital role in protecting Hoosiers and our environment. It is a privilege to work alongside IDEM's dedicated employees, and citizens should be proud that we have seen great progress in Indiana. I am glad to be a part of it."
