Jackson County: Today (July 4) just before 8:00 a.m. state police responded to a two vehicle crash on I-65 northbound near the 55 mile marker. According to Trooper Matthew Holley, a 2004 Lincoln Navigator driven by 67 year old Kirby L. McDaniel, Jr. of Lithonia, GA was northbound on I-65 in the right lane. A 1996 Ford van driven by driven by 47 year old Brinton L. Unroe of Louisville, KY was also northbound on I-65 in the left lane at a high rate of speed and was catching up to the Lincoln. As the Ford van was passing the Lincoln it struck the left rear bumper of the Lincoln. After impact the Lincoln became airborne and rolled over. The Ford van then left the scene and was stopped on S.R. 11 near CR 800S in Bartholomew County by Sergeant Bob Hedger of the Indiana State Police.
McDaniel was trapped in the Lincoln for over an hour and after extrication was transported via Phi Air Ambulance Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. It was later reported McDaniel only suffered severe bruising and complaint of pain. A passenger in the Lincoln, 49 year old Cecil B. McKay also from Georgia, was transported to Schneck Memorial Hospital in Seymour with non-life threatening injuries. Unroe, who was uninjured was charged with Driving Under the Influence and Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident and was transported to the Jackson County Jail.
The crash remains under investigation. Tpr. Holley was assisted by Sgt. Bob Hedger, Seymour Fire Department, Jackson County EMS, PHI helicopter.
