INDIANAPOLIS- Indiana's preliminary seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate dropped 0.3 percent, to 8.2 percent in April. Indiana's rate is below the national average of 9 percent and below that of all neighboring states for the third month in a row. Private sector employment decreased by 2,700 in April.
"Indiana is 0.8 percent below the national rate for the first time since June 2003," said Mark W. Everson, Commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development. "The state's rate has steadily decreased over the past year."
Employment by Sector
Sectors showing significant employment gains in April include: Private Education and Health Services (1,700) and Leisure and Hospitality (1,000). The Professional and Business Services (-2,900) and Manufacturing (-1,700) sectors showed significant decline. Total non-farm employment decreased (-2,500) in April.
