The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) applauds this week's Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) order approving a $4 million-per-year energy efficiency program for Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO).
"With the approval of this order, NIPSCO becomes the second major Indiana natural gas utility that will have a robust, well-funded energy efficiency program for customers throughout its service territory," said Indiana Utility Consumer Counselor Susan L. Macey. "The OUCC looks forward to being an active participant in the development of NIPSCO's comprehensive effort, and drawing on expertise at the state and federal levels to help make the program as strong as possible."
Macey noted that the parameters for NIPSCO's future program are similar to those for Vectren Energy Delivery - which launched the state's first major energy efficiency program under a settlement agreement reached with the OUCC and approved by the IURC last year.
"The bold approaches in both of these cases will give customers of both NIPSCO and Vectren unprecedented tools to lower their natural gas usage and bills, while removing obstacles that have historically prevented utilities from encouraging lower consumption," said Macey. "At the same time, this order - as in the Vectren case - will ensure independent, third-party oversight of the NIPSCO program."
