Asia Day Six: Governor, delegation finish China leg of jobs trip

HANGZHOU, China (November 13, 2010) - Governor Mitch Daniels wrapped up the China portion of his 11-day Asia jobs trip today with a visit to the Zhejiang Provincial Museum.

Daniels and Mr. Chen Hao, Zhejiang museum director, met to share information about their respective state museums and discuss opportunities for cultural exchanges that could give patrons insight into the sister-state relationship, along with an understanding of the cultural traditions of Indiana and Zhejiang Province.

"Ties between academic institutions and the known ties between business have been growing very fast between our two provinces," said Daniels. "It is logical now to work on strengthening cultural ties and I can't think of a better way to start than a relationship with our state museum and the great state museum of Zhejiang."

At the conclusion of the meeting Daniels presented Mr. Chen with a ceramic vase made by one of the students at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. Mr. Chen reciprocated with a piece of pottery in the shape of a boat, a replica of one of the famous pieces on display in the museum. The two then toured an exhibit of Chinese pottery.

The museum visit concluded the governor's week of business in China.

"I think of all the jobs missions that we've taken over 6 years, this week in China has probably been the most promising in terms of near term opportunities.," said Daniels. "We've noted around 20 companies, not on an exploratory basis, but who are very seriously interested, and some of them already working with our people to scout sites in Indiana."

The state has already seen some promising results from the week in China. Just yesterday semi-truck trailer manufacturer, Vanguard National Trailer Corporation, a subsidiary of the Shenzen, China-based China International Marine Containers Group Ltd., announced plans to expand its operations in Monon, creating up to 20 new jobs by 2011.

Also on Friday Tom Snyder, Ivy Tech Community College president, signed an agreement with Wuxi [pron. woo-shee] Professional College of Science and Technology that supports each region's workforce training by opening the doors for curriculum collaboration and exchanges of students, faculty and staff.

"We're leaving China with a great spirit of optimism that we've got Indiana in the forefront of states in terms of great places to invest and do business and that hundreds, maybe thousands of Hoosier jobs are in prospect now," said Daniels.

On Sunday, Daniels and the delegation continue to Tokyo for the remainder of the Asia jobs mission. In Japan, Daniels will visit current customers including the leadership of Toyota, Honda and Subaru.
