SHANGHAI, China (November 8, 2010) -- Governor Daniels began his second jobs trip to China today by hosting an Indiana Business Conference attended by more than 150 Chinese business leaders in Shanghai. The governor told the story of Indiana's economy, including the state's historic strengths in the life sciences, energy, automotive and agriculture industries, during a morning presentation before meeting with several Chinese manufacturing companies considering Indiana for future investment.

"The time is right and the early signs are very favorable for the flourishing of relations between many businesses in the great country of China and the state of Indiana," said Daniels. "We hope to show as many Chinese businesses as possible what great opportunities await in a place called Indiana."

Then, members of the Indiana delegation led several sessions to further promote those sectors. The Hoosier business and community leaders on the delegation are organized into subgroups based on the four targeted industries and collectively will meet with more than 100 Chinese businesses through the duration of the jobs mission.

"With a team of industry experts covering more ground than ever before, our second jobs hunting trip to China is an aggressive, full-scale effort to introduce Indiana and its extraordinary resources to the fastest growing market in the world," said Mitch Roob, Indiana Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

To conclude the day, the governor hosted a reception for business leaders and alumni from Indiana colleges and universities who now reside in China.

On Tuesday, Daniels will meet with several Chinese manufacturing companies including Techtop, which earlier this year announced the opening of its 60,000 square-foot logistics operation in Columbus. In the evening the governor will attend a dinner with representatives from investment firms in China.

The start of Daniels' Asia jobs mission comes just days following Eli Lilly & Company's announcement of plans to open a diabetes research center in China next year and Remy Electric Motors' news that it has reached supplier agreement with the electric carmaker ZAP, which is the majority shareholder of Zhejiang Jonway Automobile Company Ltd., a Chinese auto manufacturer.
