INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 8, 2010) - For the second time in five months the state of Indiana will welcome worldwide leaders in electric vehicle innovation when members of the United Kingdom's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders meet with American electric vehicle manufacturers next week to discuss potential investment opportunities.
The UK delegation visit comes on the heels of May's U.S.-China Auto Summit, which brought approximately 70 representatives from China's emerging electric vehicle industry to Indiana to discuss potential investment opportunities. The summit, hosted by the Energy Systems Network, included the signing of a letter of intent between lithium-ion battery maker EnerDel and Chinese auto parts maker Wanxiang to create a joint venture operation at EnerDel's suburban Indianapolis facilities.
The UK summit, sponsored by Ice Miller, Indianapolis Power and Light and Purdue University, will allow representatives from UK-based electric vehicle developers and manufacturers to meet with Indiana-based manufacturers in the industry to share information and discuss potential partnerships in areas including powertrain technology, battery management, infrastructure engineering and testing.
"During our recent trade mission to Europe we told the story of Indiana's strong electric vehicle industry," said Mitch Roob, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. "This visit from top UK companies is indicative of Indiana's leadership position in the emerging electric vehicle industry and we hope our discussions will be the first step in securing future capital investment."
The delegation will include representatives from 13 UK companies and researchers including Hylomar Ltd., MIRA, Arup and RLE International. Participating Indiana companies include Bright Automotive, Delphi, Remy and EnerDel, as well as representatives of the IEDC, Energy Systems Network and Purdue University.
"SMMT has developed a valuable and close relationship with IEDC since they opened their London office in 2008 and the Indiana state business development delegation visit to the UK, headed by Governor Mitch Daniels in 2007," said David Croxson, a representative of SMMT. "This forthcoming return visit to Indiana of leading UK organisations involved in low carbon automotive technology now marks a significant further step in developing our mutual aspiration for closer links between the fast growing Indiana-based electric vehicle interests and the UK low carbon vehicle technology community."
Representatives will be in Indiana from Oct. 10-12 and in addition to individual company meetings, will participate in a luncheon at the Purdue Technology Center in Indianapolis and will join Lt. Governor Becky Skillman for a reception, hosted by Ice Miller at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Created by Governor Mitch Daniels in 2005 to replace the former Department of Commerce, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation is governed by a 12-member board chaired by Governor Daniels. Mitch Roob serves as the chief executive officer of the IEDC. For more information about IEDC, visit www.iedc.in.gov.
