The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is expanding its asbestos licensing program by providing on-line licensing renewal services beginning Sept. 1, 2010. On-line license renewals will improve service for asbestos removal professionals while increasing efficiency at IDEM.
A step-by-step video on the IDEM website shows how to complete the renewal application for an individual or contractor asbestos license.
"Using technology to help streamline service offers asbestos professionals a better way of doing business," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "The state is always looking for opportunities to improve efficiency and do more with less. The new on-line licensing renewal option is helping us do that."
Indiana law requires that all facilities (except residential buildings that have four or fewer dwelling units) must be inspected by an Indiana licensed asbestos inspector before demolition or renovation activities. If regulated asbestos containing material is found, it must be removed by licensed asbestos professionals. Currently, Indiana licenses 2,500 asbestos professionals per year.

About asbestos
Asbestos, a known carcinogen that must be disposed of in a specialized landfill, was a popular component used by manufacturers and builders starting in the mid-19th century because of its strength and ability to withstand heat, electrical and chemical damage. In the late 1970s, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission found asbestos to be a cancer-causing substance. While undisturbed, asbestos-containing materials do not generally pose a hazard to occupants and workers; however, risk of exposure increases when asbestos-containing materials deteriorate, releasing fibers into building air.
About IDEM
IDEM (www.idem.IN.gov) implements federal and state regulations regarding the environment. Through compliance assistance, incentive programs and educational outreach, the agency encourages and aids businesses and citizens in protecting Hoosiers and our environment.
