Jasper County-Indiana State Police Trooper Scott Balch responded to a four semi pile-up on north bound I-65 that required one driver being flown out (lifeline) by helicopter from the scene.
Preliminary investigation revealed that, at approximately 10:32 am, traffic north bound at the 201 mile marker (this is just north of U.S. 24) was slowed/stopped because of an earlier crash this morning. Indiana State Police and Indiana Department of Transportation had informational signage and police cars intermittently staggered throughout the back-up and also at the rear. When a 2007 Freightliner-box trailer (#1) was in the right lane slowing/stopping when it was hit in the rear by a 2005 Freightliner-box trailer (#2). The 2005 Freightliner (#2) was hit in the rear by a 2007 International-box trailer (#3), who was hit in the rear by a 1999 Freightliner-hauling a rail car (#4).
The driver of the 1999 Freightliner was trapped inside his cab and had to be extricated by the fire department. He was later flown out by helicopter from the scene to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with critical injuries.
Vehicle and Driver #1:
2007 Freightliner-box trailer owned by Transport Corporation of America out of Eagan, Minnesota. There is no load loss. Damage was only to the box trailer.
Mark W. Brafett, 53 of West Terre Haute, Indiana. He was not injured.
Vehicle and Driver #2:
2005 Freightliner-box trailer owned by Brown Transport out of Paducah, Kentucky. There is no load loss. Damage was to the front cab and trailer.
Richard T. Stroud, 51 of Paducah, Kentucky. He was taken to Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer with neck and back pain.
Vehicle and Driver #3:
2007International-box trailer owned by Hogan Transport out of Saint Louis, Missouri. There was no load loss. There is heavy front end and trailer damage.
Steven D. Rowland, 53 of Florissant, Missouri. He was taken to Jasper County Hospital with a leg injury.
Vehicle and Driver #4:
1999 Freightliner-hauling an intermodal rail car owned by Pope Transport out of Oak Lawn, Illinois. The tractor portion was totaled. There was no load loss.
Mandeep S. Nagra, 47 of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. He was airlifted from the scene and taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Family has been notified.
Remington Police Department, Remington Fire Department, Remington Ambulance Service, Carpenter Township Fire Department, and Indiana Department of Transportation.
