Errington releases 2010 legislative survey results

INDIANAPOLIS- State Senator Sue Errington (D-Muncie) recently announced the results of her 2010 Legislative Survey. Questionnaires were mailed to households throughout Senate District 26 in December 2009 and made available on her website. Errington sought input from her constituents on a variety of issues that were anticipated to come before the 2010 General Assembly.

A much talked about issue in the General Assembly this year is whether to initiate a statewide ban on smoking in public places. A majority of respondents supported the measure, voting 71 to 29 percent. Errington proposed Senate Bill 95, which would prohibit smoking in public places and places of employment, but it was not given a hearing. A statewide smoking ban was approved by the Indiana House of Representatives, but it is not expected to receive a hearing in the Republican-controlled Senate. Errington says she is disappointed the issue will not be addressed this year.

Allowing the retail sale of alcohol on Sunday, as well as expanding the retail sale of cold beer to convenience and grocery stores does not appear to have enough support to move through the legislature this year. District 26 constituents opposed both measures, with 60 percent opposing the retail sale of alcohol on Sundays, and 67 percent opposing expanding the retail sale of cold beer to convenience and grocery stores.

When asked whether the Muncie City Council and the Delaware County Council should consolidate into one legislative body, 65 percent of respondents said yes. Legislation including changes to local government operations is moving through the process, but it is too early to tell what the outcome will be for this session.
