Important 2009 Income Tax Information for Unemployment Recipients
INDIANAPOLIS (December 22, 2009) - The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) today launched a new Web page to help Hoosiers report their unemployment information on their 2009 income tax returns.
The information can be found below and at www.in.gov/dwd/2692.
Change of Address:
Unemployment recipients who have moved should provide DWD their current mailing address before January 1, 2010. The department will mail tax statements (Form 1099G) by January 31, 2010. Hoosiers who don't receive their 1099G in the mail can visit their local WorkOne Center in person to request a duplicate after February 15, 2010.
Unemployment Insurance recipients can update their address through the online benefits filing system, "Uplink", at www.in.gov/dwd/unemploymentor their local WorkOne Center.
Reporting Unemployment Income:
Unemployment benefits are taxed at the federal, state and local levels. However, the first $2,400 in unemployment benefits is tax-free at the federal level. Any amount over $2,400 is taxed.
100 percent of unemployment benefits are subject to state and local income taxes. Unemployment recipients need to add back the amount they deducted from their federal taxable income, up to $2,400, when they report their state income for 2009.
Some Hoosiers may qualify for Indiana's Unemployment Insurance deduction. See the chart below for the appropriate form to report unemployment benefits and determine eligibility for the deduction.
