Wells County and INDOT Partner in Placement of Solar Panel Flashing LED "Stop" Signs

Signs located at S.R. 116 and S.R. 124

WELLS COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Fort Wayne District and Wells County are partnering to determine the effectiveness of solar panel flashing LED "Stop" signs at S.R. 116 and C.R. 300 West and S.R. 124 and C.R. 300 West in Wells County. The "Stop" signs were recently installed.
The purpose of a LED flashing "Stop" sign is to bring more recognition to the "Stop" sign at each intersection.
Wells County Commissioner Kevin Woodward began the discussion with Deputy Commissioner Bob Alderman earlier this year for the placement of four - 48 inch LED "Stop" signs, two per intersection. That work has now come to fruition.
Woodward explained, "These intersections have been trouble spots for years with near misses and fatalities. The LED lights will bring awareness to these intersections."
Wells County is the first County in the Fort Wayne District to request the partnership. The county provided funding, as well as installation and maintenance responsibilities. The signs themselves meet INDOT's standards.
INDOT is allowing this type of sign to be used at two trial locations in Wells County for evaluation of the product and for its effectiveness for three years. The area will be monitored by INDOT, Wells County and by several enforcement entities. Should the lights not work, the sign sheeting meets INDOT's reflectivity standards.
Although Fort Wayne is the first Department of Transportation District in Indiana to have this type of signage, it does have other solar paneled flashers that are mounted above signs to attract attention to a particular sign.

 Flashing LED Stop Signs Facts:
. Eight red LED lights flash every 1 second on the perimeter of the sign
. Sign can operate for 14 days without solar power
. Battery life is five years
. Sign dimension is 48 inches
