Lt. Governor Skillman accepts 145,000 pounds of Indiana poultry products for the hungry

INDIANAPOLIS - Today Lt. Governor Becky Skillman, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, accepted a donation from representatives of the Indiana State Poultry Association of more than 145,000 pounds of Indiana poultry products for Hoosier food pantries. The donation took place during a ceremony at the Statehouse outside the Lt. Governor's office.  Some of the product donations were dropped off behind the Statehouse this morning and will be distributed locally through the Shepherd Community Center. Others were donated in the name of Lt. Governor Skillman and will be delivered directly to local communities.

"These donations of high protein eggs, chicken, turkey and duck are especially appreciated this time of year as we help to feed hungry Hoosiers," said Lt. Governor Becky Skillman.  " I want to thank our very generous Hoosier poultry producers for these donations and for doing what they do best-using modern agriculture to produce the food needed to feed our state and the world."

In addition to the donation, the Indiana State Poultry Association presented the Lt. Governor the State turkey and a Pysanky Egg representing Indiana to show their appreciation of the Daniels Administration's continued support of Indiana agriculture. The Pysanky Egg was decorated by Spiceland, Ind., artist Sharon Day.

Donations were made by: Berne Hi-Way Hatchery, Creighton Brothers, Culver Duck, Farbest Foods, Hy-Line, North America, Maple Leaf Farms, Perdue Foods, Miller Poultry, Rose Acre Farms, Tyson Foods, Wabash Valley Produce and Chore-Time Equipment.

Indiana State Poultry Association Executive Vice President, Paul Brennan noted that "Indiana's poultry producers benefit the Hoosier economy and contribute to the state and their local communities through donations.  This event alone has occurred for 62 consecutive years."
