Statehouse Page Program Back for Students

STATEHOUSE-The 2010 legislative session begins in January, and state Rep. Tom Knollman (R-Liberty) encourages area students to apply for the Statehouse Page Program. 

The Indiana House of Representatives' page program allows students from across the state to experience the lawmaking process firsthand. Participating Hoosier students are able to observe and join Statehouse activities serving as a legislative page.

"The page program serves as a great educational tool," said Rep. Knollman. "Students learn firsthand how the General Assembly works. They assist legislators in a number of capacities and I strongly encourage interested students to apply. It's a great experience."

During the page experience, students will be given a tour of the Capitol, including the governor's office, the chambers of the Indiana House, Senate and Supreme Court. Pages are also given an opportunity to witness any floor sessions and committee hearings that might be taking place during their visit. Finally, pages will spend time in the House chambers with Rep. Knollman, assisting him throughout the day.

Pages must be at least 13 years old and will receive an excused absence from school for the day. Each page is responsible for transportation to and from the Statehouse. Due to the January through March short session, availability is limited, so students should send in requests promptly. The House page office will try to meet requests for specific dates.
