vigo County-Indiana State Police Troopers and other emergency agencies responded to a two-vehicle crash at 11:30 a.m. today on Chamberlain Street at Audrey Ave. The crash involved an on-duty Vigo County Sheriff's Deputy and another motorist.

Preliminary investigation revealed a southbound vehicle was stopped on Chamberlain Street at Audrey Ave attempting to make a left turn onto Audrey Ave. A blue 2002 Dodge Intrepid driven by 29 year old Kristopher L. Mumma of Jasonville, IN was southbound on Chamberlain Street approaching the stopped vehicle. Mr. Mumma failed to adequately slow or stop his vehicle and suddenly veered into the northbound lane to avoid impact with the stopped vehicle. He then collided with a northbound 2007 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Vigo County Sheriff's Deputy Lieutenant Tim A. Gossett, age 50, of Terre Haute, IN.

Investigators believe Mr. Mumma's attention was diverted to articles inside his vehicle causing him to not have adequate time to stop.

Kristopher Mumma was transported to Union Hospital in Terre Haute for treatment of a left leg injury and other complaints of pain. He is expected to be treated and released.

Tim Gossett was also transported to Union Hospital in Terre Haute for treatment of neck, shoulder and back pain. He is expected to be treated and released. Gossett was on routine patrol at the time of the crash.

Mumma was cited for driving left of center. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Seatbelts and air bags were in use.

The crash was investigated by Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Chip McKee. He was assisted by ISP Senior Trooper Troy Cobb; Vigo County Sheriff's Deputies; Trans Care Ambulance and Seelyville Fire/Rescue.
