Sen. Miller receives Indiana Public Health Award

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 19, 2009) - Called a "consensus builder" with "singular devotion to the health and welfare of all Hoosiers" Sen. Pat Miller (R-Indianapolis) received the Indiana Public Health Award Thursday, Oct. 15, during the George H. Rawls Scholarship Dinner.

Miller, long time chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Provider Services, was one of three public health leaders honored at the event, hosted at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis.

State Rep. Greg Porter (D-Indianapolis) presented the award to Miller.

"She is truly a consensus builder," Porter said of Miller. "On top of that, she's a registered nurse. She's lived this."

Porter credited Miller for helping craft legislation providing health insurance to the underserved and being a strong advocate for "policies that benefit all."

Thursday's awards dinner raised funds to benefit the George H. Rawls M.D. Scholarship Fund Endowment. For the past ten years the program has awarded scholarships to help provide full tuition to the Indiana University School of Medicine for underrepresented minority students who aspire to become physicians.

"Thank you for the commitment to help prospective young medical students with this wonderful scholarship program," Miller said.

Others honored were Dr. Gerardo Gomez, Wishard Hospital's chief of trauma, surgical critical care and emergency surgical services; and Helen L. Scheibner, who worked with the Indiana State Board of Health for 46 years.
