Get spooked and thrilled at Indiana Dunes State Park at its "Howl"oween event, Oct. 31.
Attendees can hear scary stories, go trick-or-treating, decorate their campsite, and take a special tour of the Dunes' pet cemetery.
Activities start on Saturday with a wide array of programming featuring the critters that spook and haunt many on dark, quiet nights. Judging for the campsite-decorating contest will run from 4 to 7 p.m. Children are encouraged to bring their costumes for trick-or-treating from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
The night will end with two spooky hikes into the dunes. Visitors can choose from the pet cemetery hike or a special hike to search out the creatures of the night. Registration is required for either hike (spaces are limited) and children younger than 12 are required to bring a parent. Sign-up will be at the Nature Center on Saturday. While there will be no intentional spooking of the children, imaginations may run wild that night.
"The pet cemetery is an eerie place, even in the daylight," said Brad Bumgardner, interpretive naturalist.
All events are free after paying the standard daily weekend gate fee of $5 for in-state vehicles and $10 for out-of-state vehicles. All program times are Central Daylight Time (CDT). For more information call (219) 926-1390.
