Lt. Governor Skillman awards more than $5 million for community development projects from disaster recovery funds

Today, Lt. Governor Becky Skillman announced 21 Hoosier communities will receive grants totaling $5,284,860 for community development projects. These funds, from the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, will aid in economic recovery after several natural disasters caused damage in many areas across the state during 2008.

"I saw firsthand the damages these storms caused to our small cities and towns," said Lt. Gov. Skillman. "In these tough economic times, it is critical to leverage all of the resources we can to help stimulate economic growth in communities that were affected by the natural disasters."

The communities will use their funding for projects that include downtown revitalizations, fire trucks or fire stations. Grants are awarded through a competitive application process. Community distress needs, percentage of low-to-moderate income households served, and project's impact on overall economic recovery efforts were considered in the scoring procedure.

Indiana's CDBG Disaster Recovery program is administered by the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. OCRA provides technical assistance to community leaders during the 18-month implementation of their community development projects.  Grantees include:
