Sens. Alting, Hershman: Purdue University, Indiana Veteran's Home Projects Receive State Funding

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 25 2009) - State Sens. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) and Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield) said today the State Budget Committee approved funding for various projects and upgrades to Purdue University and the Indiana Veteran's Home.

Hershman, a member of the committee, said lawmakers approved more than $26.5 million in funding for four Purdue University projects.

"Now construction of an airport hanger, Herrick Laboratory and various energy savings projects can move forward, as well as renovations to the Civil Engineering Building Hydraulics-Hydrology Laboratory," Hershman said.

While at Purdue University, Hershman and fellow lawmakers toured the Medical Education facilities in Lynn Hall.

Hershman and Alting worked to secure state funding for the facilities that will house the Indiana University School of Medicine in Lafayette.

"In order to meet the growing need to educate medical students, the state dedicated nearly $6 million in funds so that the program can increase class sizes by 30 percent over the next few years," Hershman said. "Nearly $12 million in additional bonding authority will help fund the expansion project."

Lawmakers also got a glimpse of renovations at Mackey Arena, a multi-purpose sports facility, Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering and the Fitness and Wellness Center.

Alting said lawmakers approved $3.4 million in funding for the Indiana Veteran's Home.

"Now much needed improvements to various buildings on the campus of the Indiana Veterans' Home can begin," Alting said. "Renovations include new roofs, interior repairs, maintenance to air ducts and preventing erosion from creating structural damage to buildings."

The Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette provides nursing and domiciliary care for any Hoosier Veterans with at least one day of wartime service. The Home is open to both veterans and their spouses.

Sen. Alting represents Senate District 22, which includes a portion of Tippecanoe County.
Sen. Hershman represents Senate District 7, which includes, Carroll, Clinton, Howard, Jasper, Tippecanoe and White counties.
