STATEHOUSE (September 11, 2009) - State Sen. Allen Paul (R-Richmond) honored 87-year-old Woodrow Duffin - a World War II veteran and survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor - with one of the state's highest civilian awards Wednesday.
On behalf of Gov. Mitch Daniels, Paul presented Duffin with the Distinguished Hoosier Award for outstanding service to his community and the state of Indiana. During the ceremony, Duffin was also recognized for his exemplary service in the United States Navy.
"This award is given to those individuals who make significant contributions to their community while displaying qualities and characteristics reflecting the best of Indiana," Paul said. "He truly represents the best of Indiana and I am proud to honor him with this award."
During his military career, Duffin achieved the rank of Chief Quartermaster.
"As a fellow war veteran, he has my deepest gratitude and respect for his many years of service," said Paul, who served in Vietnam. "He protected the freedoms of all Americans as our enemies tried to take them away."
Duffin lives in Milton, Ind. with his son Matt. He is the father of four other children - Woodrow Jr., John, Marcia Powell, and Margo Williams.
Senator Paul represents Senate District 27, which includes Jay, Randolph and Wayne Counties.
