Day 1: Governor meets with Chinese officials, speaks at supplier conference
SHANGHAI, China (September 7, 2009) - Governor Mitch Daniels met local government officials and representatives from Chinese manufacturing companies considering Indiana for future investment during his first full day of business in China today.
"We want to let these Chinese companies know that there is a part of America where their business is welcome, where we will make every effort to make certain they can go into business quickly and successfully and with the enthusiastic support of the public sector as we represent it," said Daniels.
During a meeting at the Hengshan Picardie Hotel with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng, the two discussed the economic situation in the United States and China and expressed the desire to work together as Shanghai-based companies look to expand globally in the United States.
Daniels was the featured speaker at a conference hosted by Cummins, Inc. for representatives of some of Cummins' top Chinese suppler companies and members of the Indiana delegation. Steve Chapman, Cummins' group vice president for China and Russia, who lives in Beijing, introduced Daniels. The governor discussed Indiana's business climate and encouraged conference attendees to visit the Hoosier state as they consider setting up operations in the U.S. The governor was the guest of honor at a luncheon hosted by Cummins at the conclusion of the conference.
Later Monday, Daniels spoke by phone to U.S. Ambassador to China and former Governor of Utah Jon Huntsman, Jr., before meeting with Jian Heping, vice chairwoman of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce. The commission is the government organization that oversees all inbound and outbound foreign investment in the province.
To conclude the day, the governor hosted a reception for the Hoosier Club of Shanghai, a local network of business leaders and alumni from Indiana colleges and universities.
On Tuesday, Daniels will speak about Indiana's clean energy initiatives at the American Chamber of Commerce's Greentech: A Call to Action conference and meet with officials from Eli Lilly & Company at Lilly's facility at the Pudong Science Park, among other events.
