Hedrick's Racing Pigs fly for Oreos
State Fair's daily races more family fun than competition
INDIANAPOLIS - Typically runners load up on pasta before the big race, but these athletes are a little different. They eat Oreos.
Did we mention that they also have pink, curly tails?
The Indiana State Fair will feature Hedrick's Racing Pigs, a fun, family-oriented show that features professional pig callers and their athletic swine counterparts - complete with racing silks - in the Riley Fun Park. Audience participation is encouraged and laughs are unavoidable as the pigs race down the "ham stretch" five times a day beginning at 11 a.m.
"When my kids were little, they loved Oreo cookies," said Joe Hedrick, owner of Hedrick's Racing Pigs. "We tried it out on the pigs, and they just love 'em."
These racers aren't your typical swine, nor do they have typical names. Lindsey Loham, Hama Montana, Snoop Hoggy-Hog, Oprah Swinefry, Elvis Pigsly and Squealy Nelson all race out of the gates in hopes of winning a prized Oreo cookie.
"I think the most interesting thing about the pig racing is that audiences don't know what the heck to expect," Hedrick said. "It's unbelievable how many people have never seen a pig race before, but they always love the squealin' and peelin' of the race!"
Hedrick's Racing Pigs will perform at 11 a.m., 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. each day of the Indiana State Fair, Aug. 7-23.
