LaPorte County gypsy moth treatment, May 15

The Indiana DNR is conducting Gypsy moth aerial treatments Friday morning, May 15 in LaPorte County.

Aerial treatments for all affected areas in Allen County were successfully completed earlier in the week.

Maps of the treatment sites and further information about gypsy moths and the scheduled aerial treatments may be found on the DNR Entomology Web site at gypsymoth.IN.gov.

The second round of the two-step process is scheduled for next week for both counties, weather permitting. Both will be done on the same day if conditions permitted. Dry weather with little wind is ideal.

In Indiana this treatment program, conducted by the DNR Division of Entomology and Plant Pathology, has kept gypsy moths in check and confined mainly to the northeastern part of the state for more than 25 years. This invasive pest species, originally from Europe, can attack more than 500 kinds of plants, primarily oak trees.

Those with questions may call the DNR, toll-free at 1-866-NO EXOTIC (1-866-663-9684) beginning at 5:30 a.m. on days treatments are scheduled; or 1-877-INFO DNR (1-877-463-6367), between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  People may also contact their Purdue county extension office for information at 1-888- EXT- INFO (1-888-398-4636).
