Rep. Gutwein's Statement on the the State Budget and Unemployment Insurance

Please include the following statements from Rep. Gutwein in your coverage of legislative action on these issues:

State budget

"The proposed budget failed to pass the litmus test for true fiscal conservatism," said Rep. Gutwein. "It unwisely spent stimulus funds to prop up revenue shortfalls, and that's dangerous because it could easily lead to future tax increases. In general, the budget spent too much, too irresponsibly, on too many unnecessary things."

Unemployment insurance

"The unemployment insurance fix failed to meet expectations," said Rep. Gutwein. "I'm very sympathetic to the record-setting unemployment problem our state is facing, but shifting the entire burden onto Hoosier businesses isn't a smart move. Raising taxes is never an answer to anything.  Especially during these tough economic times, businesses are going to have to find more ways to cut in order to pay these increased taxes. In my experience, the first place that happens is usually payroll. I couldn't support the measure for that reason alone."
