When: 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2008
What do rope-making, archery, race cars and protecting the environment have in common? They will all be introduced to Cub Scouts and their families at the Cub Scout Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 4790 W. 16th Street, Indianapolis.
Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) staff will be helping young scouts and their families learn steps that they can take every day to make a difference in the environment while completing requisite steps toward earning merit badges, pins and belt loops.
"It is exciting to see young people learning how to be good stewards of the environment," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "The Boy Scout and Cub Scout programs have a long history of caring for the environment. If our youth learn to make a difference at an early age then it will be a lifestyle habit when they are adults."
As part of its educational outreach efforts, IDEM will bring the Hoosiers Care initiative to Fun Day. Kicked-off at this year's Indiana State Fair, Hoosiers Care is a collaborative effort between IDEM, the Indiana Office of Energy & Defense Development, the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority and the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor.
Designed to educate Hoosiers on what they can do to protect the environment, Hoosiers Care encourages individuals to focus on small things that can be done every day to reduce unhealthy air emissions and promote a cleaner and healthier environment. Small changes can add up to make a large, positive environmental change for Indiana's environment.
