IDEM grant to help Sullivan County SWMD offer recycling services to local organizations

County to divert over 26,000 pounds of material from landfills

SULLIVAN, Ind. -- The Sullivan County Solid Waste Management District (SWMD) is starting a new recycling service that will keep an estimated 26,000 pounds of recyclables out of local landfills. The Sullivan County SWMD is reaching out to local organizations to increase the amount of recyclables collected.

The program is made possible with a grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's (IDEM's) Recycling Grants Program. IDEM funds will help the Sullivan County SWMD purchase recycling bins, a dual axle trailer, and educational materials. The new program will increase the number of collection points for recyclables and raise awareness through educational materials and the visual impact of the containers.

"IDEM awards the grants for recycling projects aimed at reducing the amount of recyclables that Hoosiers put in the trash, but the benefits go well beyond trash reduction because recycling also saves money, conserves energy, preserves natural resources, and reduces emissions," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "Sullivan's recycling effort will make a significant environmental impact and help raise recycling awareness through local organizations."

The grant money comes from the Indiana Solid Waste Management Fund, an account generated by a per-ton fee on solid waste disposed at Indiana landfills. The fund supports source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting to prevent solid waste from permanent disposal. IDEM awards recycling grants twice each year. Information about the recycling grant program can be found at www.recycle.IN.gov/5748.htm .
