Broden announces funding for high-speed internet access at public libraries

Indianapolis- On Thursday the State Budget Committee approved the release of funds to local libraries to pay for internet access expenses. State Senator John Broden (D-South Bend) said the funds, which were appropriated by the General Assembly in 2007, will help local libraries continue to provide internet access to all Hoosiers in safe, public spaces.

"High-speed internet is essential to any public library," said Broden. "This funding will help our local libraries continue to provide residents with the fast internet service that they expect."

The Budget Committee approved the release of this appropriation to fund internet connectivity in 214 Indiana public libraries. The funds are designated to be used only for access charges. In Senate District 10, the following libraries were approved for funds:

. Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library              $7,200.00
. St. Joseph County Public Library                       $7,761.18

Beyond access to general news, information and research sources, Hoosiers are also accessing state services online at an increasing rate, including registering motor vehicles and filing unemployment claims. Of particular concern to Broden is the need to make internet access available for needy and elderly Hoosiers who will soon be pushed to apply for Medicaid, food stamps and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) on computers instead of in face-to-face meetings with case workers. Those changes by the Family and Social Services Agency (FSSA) are currently on hold but expected within the next year.

"Nearly half of all Hoosiers do not have internet access in their home," Broden commented. "High-speed internet in public libraries will be an important resource for those who need access to vital services such as Medicaid and food stamps once the changes by FSSA are implemented."
