Senator Young announces approval of funding for public libraries
Funding will help public libraries provide internet access
Indianapolis- Last week the State Budget Committee approved the release of funds to several public libraries in Crawford, DuBois, Harrison, Perry and Warrick Counties to pay for internet access expenses. State Senator Richard D. Young (D-Milltown) said the funds, which were appropriated by the General Assembly in 2007, will help local libraries continue to provide internet access to all Hoosiers in safe, public spaces.
"I am happy to support public libraries and the recent funding granted to pay for high-speed internet," said Young. "Residents will have a faster and easier way to access the state services that are now available online."
The Budget Committee approved the release of an appropriation to fund internet connectivity in 214 Indiana public libraries. Funds are designated to be used only for access charges. In Senate District 47, the following libraries will receive funds:
. Crawford County Public Library $3,180.00
. Huntingburg Public Library $3,600.00
. Harrison County Public Library $4,500.00
. Cannelton Public Library $1,800.00
. Tell City Perry County Public Library $2,700.00
. Boonville Warrick County Public Library $5,495.64
Beyond access to general news, information and research sources, Hoosiers are also accessing state services online at an increasing rate, including registering motor vehicles and filing unemployment claims. Of particular concern to Young is the need to make internet access available for low-income and elderly Hoosiers who are being pushed to apply for Medicaid, food stamps and temporary assistance on computers instead of in face-to-face meetings with case workers.
"Without this funding most public libraries would not be able to upgrade their internet services and keep up with the internet traffic in their facilities," commented Young. "When nearly half of Hoosiers are without internet access in their homes and the state pushes citizens to acquire their services online, we have no choice but to make sure each library offers the best technology available."
Young represents Senate District 47 which includes portions of Crawford, Dubois, Harrison, Perry, Spencer, Warrick and Washington counties.
