The Grissom Memorial at Spring Mill State Park, which honors astronaut Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, will be closed for renovations beginning Sept. 29.
The renovations will nearly double the space available for exhibits. The Gemini 3 capsule and spacesuit will still be a part of the Memorial. However, the renovations will allow the park to showcase a variety of new items on loan from Betty Grissom, Gus's widow.
"It's an exciting project. The new exhibits will tell a more complete story of Gus's life and his career as an astronaut, and include more interactive components for visitors," Jill Vance, Spring Mill State Park's interpretive naturalist, said.
The Grissom Memorial will open in April 2009. The renovated Memorial will be officially rededicated on July 18, during the park's annual Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom Day celebration.
