IDEM, city, gas station owner are responding to fuel release

Today the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and local officials are helping with the containment and recovery of gasoline that was accidentally released from a Carmel gas station. Responders' efforts today will focus on recovering the product from nearby storm sewers and sanitary sewers impacted by the release.

The release was detected Wednesday evening and does not appear to have impacted any area water bodies, although monitoring will continue throughout the response efforts as a precaution.

Preliminary estimates from the gas station, which is located at 808 West Main Street in Carmel, put the release at 8,000 gallons of gasoline.

Other organizations responding to the incident include the Carmel Fire Department, Carmel Street Department, Carmel Department of Public Works, Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency, and the Hamilton County Health Department.
