The Family and Social Services Administration's (FSSA) Division of Aging reminds Hoosiers that they still have until October 15 to file a tax form to receive their economic stimulus payments. Congress approved Economic Stimulus Payments for 130 million households to give them more income to spend during the difficult financial times many are now facing. Individuals are eligible for $300 payments or $600 for married couples.
"We want to remind and encourage everyone to file for this reimbursement if they have not already done so," said Aging Director Megan Ornellas. "Many Hoosiers have yet to fill out the short tax form that could provide some extra spending money in these difficult times."
Five million people, mostly low-income seniors, disabled veterans and others with disabilities have not yet filed to receive their stimulus payments. The payment does not count as income for benefits including SSI, food stamps or Medicaid. Indianapolis is ranked 30th out of 100 cities nationwide whose eligible citizens have not yet filed for the payment. 14,835 eligible Hoosiers residing in Indianapolis remain to file, with 92,472 statewide remaining to file.
Even if you do not typically file taxes, you must submit tax form 1040A with the IRS by October 15 to receive your payment. In order to qualify you must have had $3,000 or more in income during 2007 from Social Security benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), veterans' disability benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits, earnings from work, or a combination of any of these benefits. If you have already filed a Form 1040 or 1040A in 2008 or a Form 1040EZ in 2007, you do not need to do anything else.
