INDIANAPOLIS - State Senator Frank Mrvan (D-Hammond) spoke before the state Commission on Tax and Financing Policy this week to bring attention to a local public safety training facility in Northwest Indiana. Mrvan said he believes the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, located on the campus of Indiana University Northwest, deserves stable funding from the state to ensure public safety in the region.
"The quality and professionalism of our police officers contributes to a higher quality of life in Northwest Indiana," Mrvan said. "The Northwest Academy provides the training that officers need throughout their career at a center close to home."
The Academy, established in 1982, provides training for 47 police departments covering a seven county radius.
Mrvan authored legislation this year that would have imposed a one dollar fee on some Bureau of Motor Vehicles transactions to raise additional funds for law enforcement academies and training centers throughout the state. The bill failed to become law this year, but Mrvan expects the General Assembly to consider similar measures in the future.
"As long as the law enforcement training academies need funding, I'll be looking for ways to support them in that effort," Mrvan said.
The Commission on Tax and Financing Policy meets during the General Assembly's interim period to conduct in-depth research and analysis of fiscal issues affecting the state. Recommendations from the committee are often the basis for future legislation. More information about committee topics, schedules and agendas is available online at www.in.gov/legislative/interim.
