Security improvements scheduled for Indiana Government Center office buildings

INDIANAPOLIS (July 14, 2008) -Indiana Department of Administration (IDOA) Commissioner Carrie Henderson today announced the implementation of the second phase of security improvements at IndianaGovernment Center. These improvements impact all state employees and all Indiana Government Center north and south building visitors.

Effective July 21, 2008:

These security upgrades are being implemented in accordance with 25 IAC 8, in coordination with the Indiana State Police, and upon the recommendation of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Council (C-TASC). C-TASC is chaired by Lt. Governor Skillman; membership includes representatives from all three branches of state government, as well as local and state law enforcement officers.

"Access to State Government is so important," said IDOA Commissioner Carrie Henderson. "These measures, which have been recommended by C-TASC, preserve that access while ensuring that the buildings and everyone in them are as secure as possible."

Building visitors will be required to pass through metal detectors, and all bags and packages will be x-rayed and may be subject to further inspection. Those with pacemakers, defibrillators or other medical devices need to notify the Capitol Police officers staffing the entrance so that a search can be conducted with a hand-held metal detector.

State employees will be able to use their security access cards to enter the North and South buildings via any door with an access card reader. Anyone without a security access card, including State employees who forget their access card, must use a public entrance.

"This change will take a little getting used to for all of us," said Henderson. "But, I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we work to better secure State employees and infrastructure."
